Statement
Hilda Brown is a native Alabamian now living in Montgomery. Her first art instruction began in Alexandria, Virginia while her husband completed medical training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She later had private lessons with Birmingham, Alabama artists Cornelia Rivers and Katherine Blackford. After a move to Montgomery in 1969, she continued instruction with local artists Barbara Gallagher and John Wagnon. In 1988 she began formal instruction in The Fine Arts Program at Huntingdon College with Clark Walker and in 1989 enrolled in The Department of Fine Arts at Auburn University in Montgomery. The core of her work there was done with Charles Shannon followed by study with Phil Coley and Richard Mills. She also did an independent study with Richard Mills.
Additional instruction includes several weeks of concentrated study with Ovanes Berberian, a well-known colorist, landscape and still life artist, at his summer studio in Rigby, Idaho and a workshop with David Leffel, artist, author and former teacher at the Art Student's League in New York, N.Y. Hilda paints en plein air and also from sketches and photographs at her home studio where most of her work is done.
